What ATEX Certification Means
ATEX certification under Directive 2014/34/EU requires the manufacturer to have every device design independently assessed by an EU Notified Body. The assessment confirms the device meets the technical requirements of the relevant IEC 60079 series standards — primarily IEC 60079-0 (general) and IEC 60079-11 (intrinsic safety) for smartphone-type devices. Reading the ATEX Marking
Each ATEX certified mobile phone carries a marking such as: « Ex » II 2G Ex ia IIC T4 Gb. This breaks down as: II = surface industry equipment; 2G = Category 2, Gas hazard; Ex ia = intrinsically safe, level ia; IIC = highest gas group (hydrogen); T4 = max surface temperature 135°C; Gb = Equipment Protection Level b for Zone 1.
