The Science Behind Explosion-Proof Devices

Understanding the technology that keeps workers safe in hazardous environments.

ATEX

What is ATEX?

ATEX stands for "ATmosphères EXplosibles" — the European Union's framework for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres. ATEX certification ensures that electrical and mechanical equipment is designed and manufactured to prevent ignition of explosive gases, vapours, or dusts. All INFINITY EX devices are ATEX-certified under Directive 2014/34/EU.

Intrinsic Safety

Intrinsic Safety (Ex i)

Intrinsic safety is the most widely used explosion protection method for portable electronic devices. It works by limiting the electrical and thermal energy within the device to levels too low to ignite an explosive atmosphere — even under fault conditions. INFINITY EX phones and tablets use intrinsic safety as their primary protection method.

IP68

IP68 Ingress Protection

IP68 is the highest standard of ingress protection, indicating that a device is completely dust-tight and can withstand continuous immersion in water. For workers in oil and gas environments, IP68 protection is essential to prevent contamination and maintain device integrity in wet or dusty conditions.

5G

5G in Hazardous Areas

5G technology brings ultra-fast connectivity, low latency, and massive device density to industrial environments. For hazardous area workers, 5G enables real-time video streaming, IoT sensor integration, remote monitoring, and faster data transfer — all while maintaining full ATEX Zone 1/21 certification. The INFINITY EX 101 Ultra is the world's first 5G ATEX-certified smartphone.

Android

Android in Explosion-Proof Devices

Modern INFINITY EX devices run Android 13, providing access to the full Google Play ecosystem while maintaining ATEX certification. This means workers can use familiar apps — email, mapping, video calls, ERP systems — without compromising on safety. Android's enterprise management features also allow IT departments to deploy and manage devices at scale.

Hazardous Area Zones

Understanding Zone Classifications

Hazardous areas are classified into zones based on the likelihood and duration of an explosive atmosphere being present. This classification system is used worldwide to determine what type of equipment can be safely used in a given area.

Gas and Vapour Zones (IEC 60079-10-1)

Zone 0: An explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously, or for long periods, or frequently.

Zone 1: An explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

Zone 2: An explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does, will persist for only a short period.

Dust Zones (IEC 60079-10-2)

Zone 20: An explosive dust atmosphere is present continuously, or for long periods, or frequently.

Zone 21: An explosive dust atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

Zone 22: An explosive dust atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does, will persist for only a short period.

Common Questions

Technology FAQs

Can I use a regular smartphone in a Zone 1 area?
No. Standard consumer smartphones are not certified for use in explosive atmospheres and could act as an ignition source. Only ATEX-certified devices like INFINITY EX products should be used in Zone 1 or Zone 21 areas.
What does "intrinsically safe" mean?
Intrinsically safe (Ex i) means the device is designed so that the electrical and thermal energy it generates is too low to ignite an explosive atmosphere, even under fault conditions. This is achieved through careful circuit design, component selection, and energy-limiting barriers.
How do I verify a device's ATEX certification?
Every ATEX-certified device has a certification marking on the device and in its documentation. The marking includes the Ex symbol, the equipment category, the gas group, and the temperature class.
Can INFINITY EX devices be modified or repaired by third parties?
No. Any unauthorized modification or repair of an ATEX-certified device will void its certification and render it unsafe for use in hazardous areas. All repairs must be carried out by INFINITY CO. or an authorized service center to maintain certification validity.
